The Ladies Association was founded in 1969 by three counties, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire, and named initially as ‘Midland Counties Ladies Bowling Association’.

BCGBA Early Days

In the late 1800’s there were a number of top professional bowlers about, playing games ranging from 41 up to 101 up and for what was classed in those days as large sums of money.

Ancient Origins

The precise origins of bowls are difficult to pinpoint, but archaeological evidence suggests that games involving rolling stones or balls toward a target were played thousands of years ago. Excavations in ancient Egypt uncovered stone objects in tombs dating back to around 3200 BC that resemble early bowls or jack stones.
