Introduction:

To be a member of the British Crown Green Bowling Association, a Club, League, Association, County or Affiliate Member must hold a minimum of 5 million Public Liability insurance in respect of, death of, injury to, damage to the property of, club members, opponents, members of the public; arising from playing in, officiating at, or attending, games of bowls at the bowling green. That policy needs to cover members for the same, on behalf of the organisation.

The BCGBA hold a Group Membership Combined Liability Insurance Policy. As a BCGBA Affiliated Club, League, Association or County you can opt into this Group Policy. Recording Insurance Cover with the BCGBA

If you have decided to take advantage of the BCGBA Group Policy for the 2026 Season, payment will be taken by manual process via instruction from the BCGBA Membership Manager. Query can be sent to membershipmanager@bcgba.org.uk If your organisation has not opted in to include the insurance cover as one of your membership benefits, please provide evidence of your insurance cover to your County Secretary. In 2027 this process will be completed via an automated process via the new BCGBA Database.

What is Liability insurance?

One of the membership benefits to BCGBA is Liability insurance. Cover is summarised below.

Protection against claims that you have breached your legal liability by negligence, nuisance or trespass.

Insurance is a risk transfer mechanism, which intends to give protection against the unknown financial consequence of a claim. The Insurance available to BCGBA members includes the following:

  • Public & Products Liability – Accidental bodily injury to third parties and/or damage to third party property arising out of the insured activities.
  • Cross Liabilities (Member-to-Member) Protects members, should a claim be made by a fellow member.
  • Professional Indemnity – cover for negligent acts, errors or omissions in respect of a professional opinion, including injury following tuition, advice, coaching or instruction, against claims made during the period of insurance.
  • Directors and officers- This policy provides protection for clubs’ committee members, directors and trustees if an allegation is made against them that relates to their management of the club
  • Employers Liability- is a defensive policy that protects the club if someone who is working for you is injured and claims compensation from you because they allege their injury was a result of your negligence.
  • Abuse – Protection for damages awarded against the committee members for abuse or molestations, made during the period of insurance.
  • No protection will be provided to any party who actually commits, condones or ignores any abuse or molestation.
What are the limits of cover?
  • Public Liability £10m

Is there an excess to pay on liability claims?

There is a £350 excess on the Public & Products and Directors and officer’s section

Professional indemnity and Employers liability have a nil excess

Abuse excess is £1000

What do I do if our club becomes aware of an accident?

You should immediately record all relevant information as defined in the incident recording guidelines.

If there are verbal or written allegations made against your club, you should contact Howden immediately.

You should not admit liability in any circumstances or agree to pay for any damage caused as this may prejudice the position of Insurers and could invalidate a claim.

Please note that this is a Liability Policy where Insurers decide if negligence attaches to you. Therefore, any payments you make to any third parties will not necessarily be reimbursed.

Is there an age Limit on the personal accident cover?

No there is no age limit on the Personal accident cover

Should I receive a certificate of Public liability?

Certificates are only issued for employer’s liability insurance. If evidence of cover is required for public liability, the policy schedule can be used.
