The 2026 Club Team Championship Final was fought out at Meole Brace B.C on Sunday 26th April in the glorious Shropshire sunshine. A day that felt at least 20 degrees warmer than the qualifying rounds a month earlier in Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, North Lancs & Merseyside.
Quarter Finals pitted Boldmere Sports & Social (W&W) against Pudsey (Parks) who had both sailed through qualification with a ‘3 and 0’ perfect record. A close fought match with only one chalk in it after six cards meant it was left to the Mordue’s at 7 and 8 to bring it home for the Yorkshire outfit by a slender 13 shot victory.
Slender winning margins were proven to be the theme of the day.
The other Warwick & Worcester outfit to qualify on Derbyshire’s Littleover green was King George V, who in truth squoze through on shots after Shropshire’s Sir John Bailey had a meltdown in their last qualifier. They played Windle BC (Merseyside) in almost a copycat game of the first quarter. A single shot going into the last two, with this time the W&W outfit coming through thanks to Paul Ward and Chris Bergin by 11 shots.
Merseyside’s second qualifier, Gladstone BC were up against Cheshire’s Castle Sports. This was the match that had the biggest margin in it all day, with Gladstone romping home by a massive 16 shots, all thanks to Jamie Smith at card no. 5 who won 21-4.
That left the Potteries, Fenton Private, winners in early 2023, against South Yorkshire’s Woodlands Park, where a strong middle order led by Gary Owen’s 21-10 saw the Potteries side hold onto that 11 shot margin to complete the semi-final line up.
King George V against Pudsey & Gladstone BC against Fenton Private.
And what a great display they both were.
King George v Pudsey was punch and counterpunch all the way down the card. Jason Galvin’s 21-11 cancelled out by Stuart King’s 21-10, a share of 21-16 and 17 winners in the middle order resulted in a two shot margin for Pudsey going into the last two and while James Cosgrave’s 21-14 stretched that lead to 9, it was that man, Chris Bergin who brought it home for the King George again with a 21-11, and a single shot win.
There was drama in the other semi, but just in a different way. Gladstone flew into an early lead with a great card from Gareth Hughes 21-5, and with that lead being extended by another 5 shots through cards 2 to 6 meant it was time to relax for Gladstone with a 21 shot profit. Not a bit of it, Fenton came roaring back through Darren Clutton and Steve Morrey, but their valiant effort fell short by 4 chalks. Galdstone hung on for the win, just.
The final, King George v Gladstone was just as thrilling.
A strong start from King George was repelled and surpassed by Gladstone’s John Finch and Mike Riley with 21-10 & 8 wins respectively in the middle order, but Paul Wards 21-12 meant it was all square going into the last two.
Bowls for bowl it went down to the wire, with King George’s William Clarke squeezing a three chalk lead with a 21-18 and while Gladstone’s Nicky Burridge beat King George’s hero from the other games, Chris Bergin got his team home, losing 21-20 and a two shot victory to King George V.
