2026 Junior County Championship - Round 1

Last weekend Shropshire produced one of the standout result in the BCGBA Junior County Championship over recent seasons. A thrilling encounter saw a one chalk victory over defending Champions Yorkshire in a superb contest played across two demanding venues.

At Allscott Heath BC, Shropshire knew they needed to maximise home advantage on the notoriously difficult artificial surface, and they delivered in impressive fashion. The hosts secured a 219–156 victory to claim a commanding +63 aggregate win. Excellent wins from Jordan Millman, Ellis Griffiths, Harry Grimston and Jack Peach helped Shropshire take control, with the home side adapting brilliantly to the pace and unique challenges of the green. The performance provided the perfect platform against a Yorkshire side renowned for its strength and consistency at junior level.

Yorkshire responded exactly as champions do in the reverse fixture at Marsh Liberal Club, producing a powerful display to win 234–172. Strong performances from Aidan Crawley, Denis Hufton, Theo Moyes and Zinédine Ayub kept the pressure firmly on Shropshire throughout a dramatic day. With every game carrying huge importance, the momentum swung repeatedly as the aggregate margin became tighter with every result card completed.

In the end, however, Shropshire held on by the narrowest possible margin, securing an overall 391–390 victory and a memorable one-chalk triumph. Defeating the reigning Champions in such dramatic circumstances represents a massive achievement for the County, and highlighted the quality, determination and composure of Shropshire’s young side under intense pressure.

Congratulations to Shropshire Juniors. I’m sure there’s more twists and turns to come in this Championship over the next few games.
